Mola Mola
is a sun-loving, flat fish with a big smile and wing-like fins that make it the ocean’s happy giant! 🌞🐟
When
The appearance of mola mola typically begins in July, but it peaks in August and September.
The mola mola, or ocean sunfish, is the heaviest bony fish in the world, reaching up to 2,000 kg! They have a unique disk-shaped body and love basking near the surface to soak up the sun. Mola molas can dive deep, up to 600 meters, and are known for their friendly nature, often interacting with divers. Despite their size, they feed mostly on jellyfish, and their skin can host a variety of parasites, which they get rid of by visiting cleaning stations or even asking birds for help!
Depth
We can usually see the mola mola at depths between 20 and 40 meters.
Notes
To dive at those depths, a PADI Advanced Open Water certification is required.
